The Sound of Hooves

(Surah Al-ʿĀdiyāt)

It begins with the sound.
Not music — no — but a heartbeat multiplied by a hundred,
the drumming of hooves splitting the morning silence.

“By the charging horses, panting and snorting,
striking sparks of fire with their hooves,
launching raids at dawn…”

They run through fog,
breath heavy like engines,
sparks flying as iron hits stone.
The air itself smells like adrenaline and dust.

“Stirring up clouds of dust,
and penetrating into the midst of the enemy.”

No one tells them why they’re running.
They just know.
Their rider’s hand tugs the reins —
and that’s enough.

They don’t question.
They don’t make excuses.
They don’t stop to check if the battlefield is fair.
They trust.
They charge.

Somewhere far behind,
a man sits counting his coins.
He has food, comfort, followers online.
He’s memorized verses about gratitude
but his tongue tastes of rust and complaint.

“Indeed, man is ungrateful to his Lord,
and he himself is witness to that,
and he is fierce in his love for wealth.”

He thinks about God sometimes —
in the same way people think about Wi-Fi:
useful when it’s needed,
Ignored when it’s not.

Meanwhile, the horses —
they run without reward.
They breathe fire and dust for a master they can’t even see.

And the sky watches,
silent but not indifferent.

Because one day,
the ground that drinks our sweat
will open its mouth.
Graves will spill secrets like overturned chests.
Hearts will confess what lips denied.

“Does he not know that when what is in the graves is overturned,
and what is in the hearts is laid bare,
indeed their Lord, on that Day, will be fully aware of them?”

And in that moment,
all the dust we raised
will settle.

🕊️ Based on Surah Al-ʿĀdiyāt (100:1–11)
A meditation on obedience, gratitude, and what it means to serve without hesitation.
